my life in photographs

It's the most wonderful time of the year for gardeners and those who stop to smell the flowers and pick them for pressing. I'm already on my way to having a jack-in-the-beanstock sized collection of hard covered books filled with flowers & leaves.

I have been busy trying to write songs of my own. The hardest part of songwriting is knowing when your song is complete and ready to have wings.

The gourd banjo alongside poems written on recipe cards by my grandmother. These scribbled notes and songs are my way of calling out to her and imagining what life could be if we had met. It's funny to think how paper and ink are here to outlive us all.

From the rolling hills of southern Alberta, we spent an afternoon at the Lethbridge museum reading about the history of the surrounding area, the building of its bridges, canaries in coal mines, horses that worked like men, the way a wind blows, and which plants like to grow. Carter had a gig in Twin Butte which led us through the mountains and into starry scattered skies, we spent the night in a barn where mice rummaged loudly resulting in a poor sleep but such is the life of a working musician.

I bought myself a dream, it's called an old kraftsman jumbo archtop. For being 40+ years old, it plays like a bird. I found it while visiting Lucky Star guitars (a vintage guitar shop) in Lethbridge. I picked it up only to pass the time and see how it would feel on my hands, but I ended up finding a whole world within its strings. The day we met was one of those days where the sun gleamed in the right direction and the universe made a friend out of clocks and breath and I. Now this old kraftsman is mine to explore and like a puppy from the pound, not only has it been rescued and delivered to a new home but it has made a new home for me. A happy happy home.

A little treat for breakfast: grain cereal, strawberries shaped like buttons, a pinch of bitter blueberries, a sprinkle of sugar and May flowers to make the air smell sweet.

Flowers of the springtime.

I found this illustrated guide to birds of the world in a Nanton thrift shop for $2. I couldn't pick a favorite page, every bird has a beauty and song of its own.

My mum found tulips at the grocery store. They were so pretty and bright. Sadly, they didn't last very long, but when they were full and growing, they made us happy as flowers often do.

In my natural habitat - beside the soil and my banjo within arms reach.

  6. Beautiful photography. It's almost like you are capturing the flowers before they fade, and distilling the essence of feeling into poetry.
